Medicare has had a history of very generous timely filing limitations over the years. However, as the old song lyrics go, “Times, they are a’changing”. While in years past, some claims could be submitted as much as 2 years from the date of service, new legislation changed the timely filing limts to one calendar year from the date of service beginning with services furnished on or after January 1, 2010.
- Claims for services furnished on or after January 1, 2010, must be filed within one calendar year after the date of service
- Claims for services furnished before January 1, 2010, must be filed no later than December 31, 2010
- Claims with dates of service October 1, 2009, through December 31, 2009, must be submitted by December 31, 2010
- Claims with dates of service before October 1, 2009, must follow the pre-PPACA (Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act) timely filing rules
A timely filing calculator can be used to calculate deadlines for services rendered prior to October 1, 2009. This handy tool may be accessed here:
