22% increase of employment prospects for medical insurance billers and health information technicians
Health information technicians held about 186,300 jobs in 2012. Most health information technicians work in hospitals or physicians’ offices.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment prospects for medical insurance billers and health information technicians in the medical billing industry are projected to grow 22 percent from 2012 to 2022, much faster than the average for all occupations.
For 2012, the median pay for a medical insurance specialist was $34,160 per year.
As medical tests, treatment procedures and the general population live longer and as more people are insured under the Affordable Care Act, qualified medical insurance billers will be needed to keep pace with growing demand.
